International Women’s Day 2006

March 8th is recognised around the world as International Women’s Day.  It is a special day for celebrating the significant economic, social, cultural, educational and political achievements of women.  It is also a time to recognise the current challenges that face women across all nations, and to find the strength and unity necessary to create equality, justice, peace and development for all.

International Women's Day was originally celebrated on March 19th in 1911 in Germany, Austria, Denmark and Switzerland.  On this day women and men marched through the streets to demand universal suffrage, universal rights to work and rights at work.  In 1918, March 8th became the recognised date for Women’s Day, being the anniversary of a demonstration for ‘bread and peace’ by Russian women in St Petersburg on the eve of World War One.  In 1975, during International Women's Year, the United Nations began celebrating March 8th as International Women's Day.”

(This account of the advent and establishment of International Women’s Day was included in the card that was prepared and presented to H.H. Shri Mataji.)
